With the UCI School of Engineering, the CeMi lab hosted an event called IGNITE, where we introduce underrepresented middle and high students to STEM and teach them and their parents about college admissions, engineering majors, and professional careers. Over 30 middle and high school students joined our lab to learn about materials science and engineering and computational research. Professor Lee introduced our lab and the field of computational materials science and engineering, followed by the rest of the lab explaining concepts in materials sustainability and applications for electronic materials. Additionally, the visiting students engaged in several hands-on activities, including visualizing atomic models of materials using compute softwares and competing with computer simulations on melting solid-blocks of ice made of atoms. We thank everyone for participating in this fun and rewarding day!
